Issey Miyake's Fall/Winter 2002 collection, titled "A-POC Inside," was a groundbreaking exploration of the relationship between clothing, technology, and the human body. A-POC stands for "A Piece of Cloth," emphasizing the concept of creating garments from a single piece of fabric without the need for cutting or sewing.
In this collection, Miyake collaborated with computer programmer Dai Fujiwara to develop garments using a computerized knitting machine. The technology allowed for the creation of intricately patterned and three-dimensional garments directly from the knitting machine, eliminating the traditional cutting and sewing processes.
The collection featured garments that were essentially "unfinished" when they came off the machine, allowing the wearer to participate in the final stage of the creative process. The garments could be customized and shaped by the wearer, adding a unique and personal touch to each piece.
Miyake's Fall/Winter 2002 collection not only showcased technological innovation but also challenged traditional notions of fashion creation, encouraging a more interactive and participatory relationship between the designer, the garment, and the wearer. The A-POC Inside collection remains a significant milestone in the intersection of fashion and technology within Miyake's body of work.
